Canadian Wildfire Smoke Expected to Impact Western MA
Once again, smoke from wildfires in Canada is expected to impact our region for the next few days. In addition, the warmer temperatures will likely increase ozone. MassDEP forecasts that “ozone may rise into the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups AQI [air quality index] for central Massachusetts in Hampden County.” These groups include those with lung or heart disease, older adults and children.
Precautions to take include:
- Limit time outdoors especially for those at greater risk due to age or health factors such as asthma and cardiovascular disease
- Wear a mask
- Run an air cleaner indoors. See our guidance on making a DIY air cleaner.
- Check with your health care provider to make sure you have your correct medication and any guidance they have for you.
- Keep track of the air quality close to your home—find the sensor closest to you at https://healthyairnetwork.org/.
