Stay Safe During Extreme Temperatures
We have been experiencing unhealthy heat days and we can expect to see more as the summer continues. High temperatures and humidity can affect anyone, but young children, older adults, people with chronic health conditions, outdoor workers, and those without access to air conditioning are especially vulnerable. Extreme heat can cause serious health problems, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
If you suspect someone is experiencing heat stroke:
- Move them to a cooler place and begin cooling them down immediately.
- Follow CDC guidance for heat-related illness.
Contact a healthcare provider. - Call 911 or seek emergency medical care right away if symptoms are severe.
Tips to stay safe during the heat:
- Stay Hydrated: Don’t wait for thirst, but instead drink plenty of water throughout the day
- Protect Yourself by Being Sun Smart: Wear (and reapply) sunscreen and cover your head with a hat
- Take Breaks: Take regular breaks inside or in a shaded area
- Wetter is Better: Heat escapes through your skin, so spray water mist, wear a wet t-shirt or have a cold shower
- Light & Loose: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing to reflect heat and sunlight
- Limit Extra Exercise: Decrease physical activity during high temperatures and workout during cooler parts of the day
- Check on People: Monitor individuals without A/C, those who spend time alone, and/or are vulnerable to heat impacts
- Cooling Centers: If you don’t have AC or good ventilation at home, seek shelter at a local cooling center like libraries and senior centers.
- If you have good ventilation, keep your windows open and run your fans.

- Don’t Leave Kids or Pets in Cars: A parked car can reach dangerously hot temperatures in minutes
- Be aware of your local air quality: Heat waves often lead to poor air quality. Monitor your air quality with the Air Watch App!
